Siddique Hamad is brought to us by his grandson. We worry they think our makeshift studio is in fact a surgery. Explaining we are not doctors, Saidoul begs us to take a picture regardless - it is "better than nothing", he syas, "for now it is all we have" - propping up the old man as the camera clicks away. The effort is too great: his portrait taken, Siddique collapses as a chair is being brought to him, his eyes rolloing and his chest wheezing as he lays in an emanciated knot on the dust. "In our culture the elderly are respected and venerated," says Saidoul, "but this man is waiting for death like a lame dog. No one should end up like this."
